Giuseppe Ielasi: Plans

SEDCD035 | Released in 2003 | $10

A year and a half in the making, this remarkably dense and subtly musical effort marks a rupture/diversion in Ielasi’s creative output. The intersection of electro-acoustic sonogrophies infused with fragments of melancholic melodies creates a near dizzying disorientation. In 1998 Iealasi founded the well-respected Fringes label, in order to document his own work as well as that of other artists. In addition to his work on Fringes, he has recorded for such labels as Leo and Sonoris, Erstwhile and Absurd. He has performed live with Taku Sugimoto, Jerome Noetinger, Dean Roberts, Thomas Lehn, Michel Doneda and Brandon LaBelle, Domenico Sciajno among many others.

Reynols: The Whistling Kettle Quartet

SED1LP | Released in 2003 | $10 |

One-sided LP, ltd to 500 copies

A singularly brilliant work for baritone, tenor, contralto & soprano whistling kettles from this unpredictable Argentinian collective Reynols seems to be more active than ever. Responsible for a bunch of highly conceptual projects such as the “10.000-chicken Symphony”, “BlanTapes”, “Fire Music”, “Reynols Plays the Eiffel Tower”, etc. this sound-art piece redefines a traditional format in classical music Їthe quartetЇ in order to expand its boundaries and possibilities. Through the three movements of this composition (Andante Mogal, Moderato uno Surido Fermo and Allegro Repuliom Lanidelo), the sound of the four whistling kettles create deep textures, ranging from minimal static drones to complex pitch counterpoints. If the String Quartet has, for centuries, been a must for composers, what can we expect from the coming XXI century quartets? Maybe this release starts eying in key an answer.

Tonalamotl: Mo(ve)mentsum

SEDCD033 | Released in 2003 | $10

Involved before and after with such groups as At the Drive-In, the Abrasion Ensemble, Mat Maneri, Fiery Furnaces, White Heat, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and the Gamelan Kyai Rosowibowo, either as drummer, guitarist, singer, tape manipulator or saron demung-ist, these recordings of the Tonalamotl date from 1997-1998, and sound like none of the above. Curiously, it also anticipates the improvised movement from Japan subsequently labeled “Onkyo” and the sort of electroacaoustic music documented by the esteemed Erstwhile imprint.

Olivia Block/Seth Nehil: Sunder/Unite

SEDCD034 | Released in 2003 | $10

Sunder, Unite began with the destruction of musical sources through the insertion of silence and/or faulty connection. It continued with the playing of small objects, fire and grass on our tour of Japan in 2000,being multiplied on many small speakers in each space and recorded in these situations. Sources continued to be recorded in our locations, train stations, a market in Kyoto… Sounds were traded and holes punched in, surfaces distorted. Transparencies of sound were overlaid and cut, residues remain. We followed an ever-shifting ground and rate-of-change. A skip and fade, an intuitive mix and then traded again. The crumbling recording of metal. A walking recording of creaking wood. Speakers in a room.

Michael J. Schumacher: Four Stills

SEDCD032 | Released in 2002 | $10

Sedimental’s first release for 2002, Four Stills, is from New York composer/guitarist Michael J. Schumacher. Schumacher has a strong presence on the experimental scene with his refined guitar “drone” compositions but parallel to this activity he has been working with number system applications of sampled material through electronics, a direct extension of his audio installations. Schumacher is also internationally recognized along with his wife and artist Ursula Scherrer, who designed the artwork for this release, for the outstanding Studio 5 Beekman space (now Diapason on 6th Ave.) that provides a sympathetic environment for audio artists to execute installations. The participants in this project read like a who’s who of leading-edge composers and experimental musicians.

James Coleman: Zuihitsu

SEDCD030 | Released in 2001 | $10

In our continuing quest to bring you new and young talented experimental musicians, sedimental is proud to release the debut cd from Boston improv heavyweight, Thereminist James Coleman. Featuring Bhob Rainey, Greg Kelley, Liz Tonne, Tatsuya Nakatani and Vic Rawlings this dynamic cd not only sheds new light on an instrument historically relegated to novelty but also provides a superb forum for experiencing an aesthetic that can be heard in much of Boston’s underground. These improvisational settings and collaborations, carefully selected by James himself, reach a place beyond their instrument individually and do so with subtlety and elegance. We recommend listening to Zuihitsu at several different volume levels to experience these qualities. This release also features the creativity of five other excellent improvisers (bios provided below).

Phill Niblock: Ghosts

SEDCD029 | Released in 1999 | nfs

This document was originally intended to be packaged with issue #22 of n d magazine to coincide with an interview I did with Phill several years ago. The material, created for an installation at Studio 5 Beekman, is much different than Phill’s composed work, using urban and country street sounds throughout southeast Asia to create a hypnotic but also chaotic collage. Phill thought it better suited as a document with the interview than a normal release.

Francisco Lopez: Untitled Music for Geography

SEDCD024 | Released in 1997 | $10

Specially re-mixed material Francisco created for the dance work, Geography, by the The Ralph Lemon Dance Co. which premiered at Yale in New Haven. At the time Francisco already had established himself as an important new composer working with huge pools of silence that then build in time stretching waves of sonic purity. This work is certainly in the vein but there’s also subtle percussive elements woven in, drawn from an African percussion ensemble that performed live during the performance. This is Francisco’s seventh cd release.

Stars of the Lid: Music for Nitrous Oxide

SEDCD023 | Released in 1995 | $10

This of course, was our first cd release from all the way back in 1993. Robert Ovetz (Ultrasound) mentioned this guy Adam who was doing amazing 4-track stuff at home. I think the name of the tape he gave me was called “Ombudsman”. The success of this release was a surprise and certainly having Joel at Cargo, who was just getting Kranky going too, champion it helped much. It certainly put us both out there. Ultimately, SOTL ended up at Kranky and are still making amazing recordings. Many say this is still their favorite Lid release, although I am partial to the “Ballested Orchestra” too. Below is the original press release that went out with promo copies.

Various Artists: Town and Country #1

v/a-Dbl 7 | Released in 1994 | $5

Our very first release was this lovely little item, the music expressing the innocence of just starting up a label, the artists personal favorites of mine, and the double 7” format expressing the ambition and desire to be a little different. It was well received and sold fairly well given sedimental was new and the artists were still fairly unknown. Obviously volume #1 implies further volumes. Maybe someday we will do another. Occasionally I encounter someone who tells me they bought this when it came out and it really makes my day. Still in print.
